This course is designed to build on students’ substantial knowledge of accounting fundamentals and to develop students’ ability to apply and critically evaluate generally accepted accounting practice (IFRS/IAS) in both a classroom setting and applied within financial corporations or business environment.

Course/Module Objectives:

The main objectives of the course are:

  1. To provide an overview of the principles of financial reporting in a global context
  2. To provide knowledge for economic and accounting concepts in relation to specialised industries and contexts
  3. To assist student to apply the International Financial Reporting Standards to particular industries and contexts
  4. To communicate the importance of corporate governance and its relationship to corporate failures

Course/Module Learning Outcomes:

After completion of the course students are expected to be able:

  1. To outline and discuss the theoretical framework and principles of financial reporting in a global context.  To critically assess the core economic and accounting concepts in relation to specialised industries and contexts
  2. To evaluate the application of the International Financial Reporting Standards to particular industries and contexts. To determine the disclosure of specific assets and liabilities in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standards. To define the elements of company groups and discuss the financial reporting principles in relation to international companies
  3. To analyse sustainability reporting and evaluate the disclosures of accounting for climate change
  4. To discuss the importance of corporate governance and its relationship to corporate failures
  5. To explain and contrast the international differences in external reporting on both financial and non-financial issues.
