This module is designed to meet the needs of managers who wish to understand and be able to influence decisions regarding the management of human resources within organizations as well as facilitate learning at an organizational level. It considers the different aspects of human resource management at a strategic level in the organization and how this differs from the more operationally-focused personnel management. In this course/module, students will work collaboratively on strategic human resource management (SHRM) issues and problems, review and evaluate information relevant to key aspects of SHRM in their own professional context and be able to apply strategies to enhance learning organizations.

Course/Module Objectives:

The main objectives of the course are:

  1. To critically evaluate contemporary strategic human resource management (SHRM) frameworks and concepts
  2. To provide a critical understanding of the learning organization and its position within the Knowledge-based-organizations
  3. To understand aspects of continuity and change in the field of human resource management and in relation to strategic human resource management specifically. Additionally, to examine aspects of continuity and change embedded in the strategic human resource management paradigm towards the enhancement of learning organizations
  4. To identify relevant metrics in strategic human resource management and how to put HR policies into action
  5. To identify the contribution that strategic human resource management can make to promoting and achieving the organisation’s strategic intent; as well as examine different ways in which HRM can be strategically pursued within organisations and its links with organisational performance
