Course/Module Description:

This course introduces students to the philosophy of research in the business/management field, including both qualitative and quantitative methods. It covers the research process and introduces students to data analytical packages such as SPSS, NVivo.

Course/Module Objectives:

The main objectives of the course are:

  1. To explain how research contributes to business decisions and practices
  2. To describe the role of theory in the business research process and to explore business research problems and various methods of approaching the problems
  3. To discuss the ethical issues applicable to business research
  4. To explore sampling designs and procedures to business research
  5. To investigate different types of quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis

Course/Module Learning Outcomes:

After completion of the course students are expected to be able:

  1. To demonstrate they understand the research process and how it applies to the field of business management
  2. To demonstrate they can use problem-solving and analytical skills to understand business problems and suggest research designs that would provide information that could contribute to a feasible solution
  3. To demonstrate they understand a range of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques by applying these to the interpretation
  4. To demonstrate they can to assess the influence of cultural and philosophical considerations when selecting and applying the various qualitative and quantitative methods studied such as interviews and surveys
  5. To communicate research in a written report and presentation
