Course/Module Description:

This module concentrates on statistics a probability threads. It focuses on underlying probability and distribution theory that underpins statistics and make use of some basic statistical tools and methods. In addition, this course examines the nature of the science of statistics and knowledge of the many applications in which it is used.

Course/Module Objectives:

The main objectives of the course are:

  1. To introduce definitions and basic concepts of descriptive statistics, probability, and statistical inference
  2. To assist students to learn a variety of statistical tests and when it is appropriate to use them
  3. To develop the students’ appreciation of recent developments in business statistics and practice and of the links between the theory of the subjects and their practical application in business operations

Course/Module Learning Outcomes:

After completion of the course students are expected to be able:

  1. To use and interpret the concepts of uncertainty, variability and probability and demonstrate a basic understanding of how these work in the real world
  2. To perform simple statistical modelling and conduct appropriate data analysis
  3. To communicate the elements of the statistical process in a clear and concise manner
