Course/Module Description:

The course provides the students with an understanding of the uniqueness and operations of hotels as for profit-organizations while accommodate customers/ tourists/ guests. This course/ module starts with an overview of the hotel development process, organizational design and then covers all of the departments within a hotel, their purpose, structures and staffing.

Course/Module Objectives:

The main objectives of the course are:

1. To introduce students to the scope of the hotel industry and the organizational structure and operational mechanics of how the departments within an individual hotel operate
2. To provide an overview of the operation of hotel facilities, including operating costs for various types of facilities and the responsibilities of the engineering and maintenance department
3. To explore renovation needs of hospitality facilities and key managerial aspects of renovations like safety and security as a paramount issue in hotels
4. To introduce the issues and opportunities inherent in the development and planning of hotels with an emphasis on setting appropriate facilities requirements, understanding industry practice, and implementing properties decisions within a balanced design, operations, and financial framework

After completion of the course students are expected to be able:

1. To demonstrate knowledge of the international dimensions of the general hotel industry
2. To apply hotel strategies to attract guests
3. To analyze, evaluate and discuss the issues that need to be addressed when doing business beyond national boarders
